In anthroposophic medicine, the kidney-adrenal system is recognized as a vehicle for expressing the soul, or astral, nature of an individual. Soul distress can cause anxiety, and eventually, depletion. The adrenal glands may overwork or be inactive.

Description

Exhaustion and stress may have a physical basis in the adrenal glands alone, or there may be a bigger picture in which liver, thyroid, and poor nutrition contribute to feeling poorly.

Blood pressure can be an indicator of whether there is excessive or inadequate astral or adrenal action.  There are no simple blood tests that pinpoint adrenal health, but potassium – sodium levels are somewhat indicative.  Some integrative physicians use hair analysis, urine test, or saliva test to assess adrenal function.

The adrenal medulla (inner part of the gland), which secretes adrenaline (epinephrine) and similar compounds, has embryological connections to the nervous system.  Adrenal medulla hormones increase heart rate, blood pressure, and the feeling of ‘fight or flight.’   This important nervous system connection is overused in our caffeinated, fast-paced, overstimulated lifestyle.  Awareness of rhythm and pacing ourselves is greatly needed in today’s over-busy world.

We have a ‘Life Sense’ which gives us feedback as to our internal well-being.  It is the REAL answer to the question:  ‘How are you?’ when we take time to attend to that inner sense.  Too often, we push past a sense of weariness, and get an unhealthy second wind driven by our nervous system.  See Astral body, soul.

By contrast, the adrenal cortex (outer part of the gland) secretes cortisol and hormones which regulate mineral metabolism and sexual characteristics.  Cortisone-type medications are powerful inhibitors of inflammation, and have as side effects swelling, increased blood sugar, increased stomach acid, thin skin, easy bruising, fat accumulation especially in the middle of the body, and thinning of bones.  The natural rhythm of cortisone secretion is greatest in the morning, when we wake up, and lowest toward the end of the day.  Taking cortisone-type medications at night can interfere with sleep.  Mood changes can also be seen with cortisone-type medications in some people.  When cortisone medications are used in a ‘burst’ or a short, decreasing dosage, side effects are usually avoided.

Treatments

Nutrition is the foundation of good health, and high quality food, especially breakfast protein, stabilizes function for the day. Endocrine glands operate rhythmically. Regular mealtime, exercise, and bedtime support their healthy function.  Put on your to-do list:  chill out, veg out.  See Adrenal Fatigue:  the 21st Century Stress Syndrome, by James Wilson.

Prunus (blackthorn) oil bath or Lavender oil bath brings relaxation, helping the astral body which is overactive and tightly bound in the physical body, to let go.  Rose oil bath creates harmonizing effect, soothing negative and and volatile emotions.  Uriel Pharmacy provides these oils.

Prunus may be taken orally to rebuild the exhausted etheric body:

  • Uriel Prunus Essence or Prunus 6x liquid or Prunus 10% liquid,  for adults ten drops 3-4 times daily orally;
  • Weleda Pharmacy Prunus Spinosa 2x for adults 7 drops in 1/2 tsp water 3-4 times daily orally.

Uriel  Argentum Bryophyllum also rebuilds the etheric body, for adults 10 pellets 3-4 times daily orally.   See Etheric body

True Botanica Adrenal Pentas for adults 20 drops twice daily orally normalizes both too little and too much adrenal activity.

Uriel Glandulae suprarenales 6x strengthens weak adrenal glands, and the mixture of Gl. supra. and Glandulae thyroidea Hypophysis 6 supports weak adrenal and thyroid at the same time.  For adults both products are dosed at 10 pellets or drops four times per day on the tongue.

Uriel Rose copper ointment supports kidney-adrenal function.  Apply  a small amount over the kidney area (where the spine and rib cage meets in the middle of the back) at bedtime.  Use a sideways figure 8 movement (lemniscate) in applying the ointment; the crossing point in the figure 8 is at the spine.  Cover warmly.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR:  Practitioners can prescribe remedies from Weleda which can include organ preps for adrenal support, in conjunction with other remedies personalized for the individual constitution..
