Chest pain due to poor circulation to the heart REQUIRES primary care doctor and cardiologist involvement. When this foundation of care is built, supportive natural treatments are valuable.

Description

Prevention of coronary artery disease is a realm in which holistic medicine makes a strong contribution. Please see Basics for General Health and Cholesterol.

For people prone to angina, keep the upper arms from getting chilled, covering the upper arms warmly at all times.

Natural substances discussed in this section will be found in the treatments listed in the next section.

The heart is a specialized muscle (see Heart).  See High blood pressure. Arnica is an herb especially valuable for supporting normal muscle function or treating damaged muscles.  This includes heart muscle.

Gold (aurum)  is the metal which corresponds to the sun and the heart. The warmth and light of the sun and of gold are readily seen.  The sun is the center of the solar system, and the heart is the center of circulation, and of our sense of self.  Gold brings centering, steadiness, rhythm, warmth, and light.  In middle potencies, D10 – D12  (10x – 12x), aurum is valuable as support for the emotional and physical aspects of the heart.  It may be used orally or topically.

An aspect of angina is the spasm of coronary arteries.  Magnesium is an important mineral in allowing contracted muscles to relax, including the tiny muscles of arteries.  Homeopathic magnesium phosphoricum brings the message of relaxation to smooth muscle.

Cactus and hawthorn (crataegus) are two plants known to support the heart’s healthy function.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR:  Arnica essence (Uriel and Weleda) is of value as a compress for supportive heart care in pericarditis and cardiomyopathy.  Your practitioner can guide you.  Because there are so many wonderful combinations of remedies for heart health and supportive treatment of angina, please work with your provider to find what is the best for you.  Husemann & Wolff Vol III describes compresses, injections, and refined treatments for different constitutional types and clinical situations.  A German version of nitroglycerine, Strodival, is used effectively for relief of angina; available outside the United States.

**Cautions**

Stomach and heart pain can be hard to separate. ‘Heartburn’ and any other chest symptom requires accurate diagnosis before instituting natural supportive treatments.
