Garden variety wear-and-tear arthritis that is expected with Aging is called osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. Arthritis has been called ‘a heart attack of the joint.’ Some people are more prone than others, and poor diet and overuse can aggravate pre-existing tendencies to arthritis.

Description

Aging involves hardening or sclerosis, and the proper metabolism of minerals keeps bones strong and joints flexible.

By contrast, rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune inflammatory condition which has a hereditary component, is symmetric, and has less relationship to aging, and wear-and-tear.

This article describes the anthroposophic understanding of the garden variety osteoarthritis (or degenerative joint disease) that is most common.
