Bladder muscle overactivity or weakened connective tissue are common causes of incontinence (loss of urine) in older women.  Child birth and aging alone can bring changes in the pelvic floor and ptosis (dropping) that may require extra support for women over time.

Less commonly, men with prostate enlargement experience difficulty with urine leaking.

Description

A detailed history of the symptoms, possibly with urodynamic evaluation, bladder stress test or post void residual urine volume measurement, can help define the type of urine incontinence present.

Urinary frequency often results from bladder spasm. Bladder spasm occurs in interstitial cystitis from an over active nerve pole (nervous system) activity and also occurs as a result of spinal cord injuries.  This type of urinary frequency is sometimes called ‘irritable bladder.’  The bladder tries to empty when only a small volume of urine is present.  This can result in needing to urinate urgently, and frequently.

Treatments

The eucalyptus oil compress relaxes the ‘irritable’ bladder that refuses to relax and hold a normal volume of urine.  The compress helps reduce urinary urgency and frequency of voiding.  Uriel or other high quality 5 – 10% eucalyptus oil (in olive oil) is placed on a piece of natural fabric (eg, cotton flannel) approximately the size of the person’s hand.   This is best done inside a small plastic bag to avoid messiness.  The bag and its contents are then placed against a hot water bottle, or between two hot water bottles, to warm up the oil-soaked compress cloth.  The warm cloth is then removed from the plastic bag and placed on the skin of the low abdomen, over the bladder area.  It is covered by a piece of wool larger than the size of the compress cloth.  Wool batting is ideal because it is lightweight and soft.  The person’s underpants are pulled up to hold the compress in place.  It can be worn at night, or in the daytime.  It should be refreshed with extra oil after 8-12 hours.  The compress cloth should be washed or discarded for a fresh cloth daily.

Copper ointment or cream for adults a small amount is applied in a sideways figure 8 (lemniscate figure) at the waistline in the back.  This supports kidney-adrenal function, relaxing and warming as a counter to an over- stressed nervous system.  The following are sources for copper ointment or cream:  True Botanica Cuprum Pentas cream; Uriel Rose copper ointment; Weleda Pharmacy prescription only  Cuprum ointment 0.4 %

Yarrow brings flexibility into the worn-down life forces (see Etheric body) and balances the upper nervous pole with the lower metabolic pole (see Rhythmic system, threefold).   Yarrow is in both of the following bladder support products:
