Inflammation of the liver comes from a variety of causes — alcohol, viruses, medications, abnormal fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
The liver is the organ with the most abundant life forces of any organ. It is not highly differentiated, almost a bag of cells, unlike the kidney and brain which have very elegant structure and do not regenerate easily. Hepatitis A, B, and C are viral in origin, and each has inflammation associated with it. Hepatitis B and C can become chronic.
Cirrhosis is a hardening process, the opposite of inflammation. Hardening processes are part of the scarring that follows chronic inflammation, such as in alcoholic or viral hepatitis. See Polarity, rhythm.
Cirrhosis of the liver can block blood flow within the liver tissue. This can cause enlargement of spleen and varicose veins in the esophagus, as well as severely deteriorating liver function.
The plant kingdom carries enormous life forces, such as an acorn growing into an oak tree. The liver has this in common with the plant kingdom. Both are dependent upon rhythm for best health.
Plants follow the rhythm of light and dark daily, and of seasons. The liver has a digestive cycle from 3 am to 3 pm, and outside this time frame is less able to digest heavy foods. The liver’s metabolic activities focus on healing and house cleaning, from 3 pm to 3 am.

All forms of liver issues are helped by having a clean diet, and avoiding alcohol and toxins in foods and drinks, including avoiding food additives and genetically modified foods. Eating rhythmically as a routine in life is healthy for the liver. In tune with the digestive phase of liver activity, we would eat ‘Breakfast like a king (queen), Lunch like a prince (princess), and Supper like a pauper.’ Expressed differently, we would have heavier food including animal products in the morning and at noon, and a light more vegetarian meal at night. See Breakfast.
Regular bedtime is healing, especially with 2-3 hours sleep before midnight. The hours of sleep before midnight are known to be more restorative. Respecting these rhythms for health keeps the liver healthy, and supports its healing if it is damaged.
Keeping the abdomen warm supports liver health, which has endothermic chemical reactions, namely, chemical reactions requiring added warmth to go forward efficiently. Tuck in your shirt. Wear an undershirt or sash or belt, so the belly is not breezy.
Yarrow compress can be applied after each meal, or just once a day, for example after supper, to boost healing and improve energy. see Yarrow compress.
