Herpes simplex can occur frequently, and herpes zoster commonly occurs once or rarely in a person’s life.
Though the first name is shared, the viruses and diseases are different.
Whether as Herpes simplex Type I or Type II, the common lesion is referred to as a ‘cold sore’ when it occurs in the mouth area, and as ‘genital herpes‘ when it occurs in the genital region. Type I usually occurs in the face area, and Type II in the genital region, but they can cross boundaries and either type can be in either region.
The first outbreak of Herpes simplex can result in a significant outbreak of painful oozing small blisters, grouped in a cluster at the junction of skin and mucous membrane. The primary outbreak is commonly more widespread and more uncomfortable than the subsequent ones which occur in recurrent Herpes.
The immune system limits the area in size, but does not rid the body of it completely. If and when an outbreak occurs again, it commonly is a few grouped tiny blisters in a small area (at or near the mucocutaneous junction), preceded by a tingling or itching or slightly painful sensation.
A person with herpes can transmit it to someone in intimate contact with him/her, such as a child or sexual partner, even if the lesion is not active.
Herpes zoster is the virus found in chickenpox and shingles. It is different from the herpes simplex virus.
In the past, chickenpox was a childhood illness occurring during the protected years of childhood. Itchy small blisters (pox) occurred widespread over the body in varying stages, from a red bump, to a juicy blister, to a scabbed over spot. It was primarily an inconvenience, not a danger.
After the initial outbreak of chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in a nerve root and may become active when there is stress, or a metabolic imbalance, and show up as shingles.
Shingles is a painful outbreak on the skin along the path of a nerve on one side of the body. When the skin rash subsides, severe pain can occur.
The chickenpox vaccine and the shingles vaccine both vaccinate against the same virus, herpes zoster. Some research shows the incidence of shingles may be increased since these two vaccines have been in widespread use.*Print This Post
Herpes simplex (cold sore or genital herpes)
The amino acids arginine and lysine function reciprocally as a pair, as though they are on a teeter-totter: When one goes up, the other goes down. The herpes simplex virus is dependent on the amino acid arginine. Using L-lysine for adults 500 mg one to three times per day lowers the arginine. Avoiding chocolate and nuts further lowers arginine, starving the virus.
Outbreaks can be shortened with use of Uriel’s Echinacea Argentum pellets for adults 10 pellets four times per day.
Prevention of outbreaks can be undertaken with use of the same pellets one dose per day ongoing.
ASK YOUR DOCTOR: Anthroposophic prescribers may recommend Uriel Echinacea argentum by injection both preventively (eg once a month) and acutely during an outbreak of herpes simplex.
Herpes zoster (chickenpox or shingles)
When chickenpox was a common childhood illness, the skin lesions were soothed with calamine lotion, the child was put in a quiet slightly darkened room, and extra vitamin A was given orally.
Shingles rash requires hygiene to avoid secondary infection. Immune strengtheners are helpful, such as
- Uriel Echinacea Argentum for adults 10 pellets four times per day orally, or
- True Botanica Astragalus Pentas for adults 20 drops 3 times per day orally, or
- Weleda Echinacea 1x for adults 7 drops in ½ teaspoon of water four times per day orally, or
- Weleda Echinadoron for adults 1 tablet four times per day orally.
When the scabs are healed, Arnica oil is valuable to control pain, applied to the painful area as frequently as needed.
- True Botanica Real Arnica Oil, or
- Uriel Arnica Body oil, or
- Weleda Arnica Massage Oil are high quality products.
- Uriel Lavender Quartz oil is a specific for nerve pain, and may be used the same way.
Accurate diagnosis is essential in order to use effective treatments, and prevent complications.
Persons with immune deficiencies, the very young, and the very old, should be protected from contact with secretions from a person with herpes simplex and herpes zoster.Print This Post
