Garden variety sore throat and head cold are part of our human experience with change of season and /or exposure to sick people. As a minor acute illness, these constitute a small exercise class for the immune system.

See Common Cold. See Acute illness vs chronic illness.

Description

The respiratory tract is a common place for inflammations to occur. Higher than the throat in the head, is sinusitis (see Sinusitis). Lower than the throat in the respiratory tract are illnesses involving the organs that give cough as a primary symptom: tracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia. (see Cough)

Inflammations of the mouth are more related to the digestive tract (see Mouth, Teeth).

Pharyngitis (inflamed pharynx) is the official name for the sore throat. It is often accompanied by enlarged lymph glands in the neck, and uncomfortable sensations of burning or scratching in the throat. Swallowing may be difficult. Throat culture may be taken if Strep throat is a specific concern.

Strep throat is a specific throat inflammation which requires professional decision-making. It is possible for the streptococcus germ to set off antibody reactions which settle on a heart valve approximately six weeks after the throat infection occurs (rheumatic fever). A very small number of people are genetically prone to this, so knowing if there is a family history of rheumatic fever is important in deciding if antibiotics are indicated. If an antibiotic is chosen, it may be started any time within the first ten days from the onset of symptoms and will prevent rheumatic fever. There is some evidence that there is less recurrence of strep throat three months later if antibiotics are not begun at the first sign of symptoms, but if one waits approximately 56 hours. This is approximately how long it takes to get the throat culture results back from the lab.

Tonsillitis (inflamed tonsils) involves the lymph tissues at the back of the throat which stand as immune system guardians meeting any foreign substance entering through the mouth and nose area. If these are very large and inflamed, there can be great difficulty swallowing.

Laryngitis (inflamed larynx or vocal cords) results in hoarseness and loss of voice.

Basics for acute illness covers the need for the Big Three: warmth, rest, and cleansing. These provide fundamental support for the immune system to be able to do its best, sometimes even if no remedies are used. When the immune system is supported, an acute illness has a strengthening effect for overall health, like an exercise class results in strengthened muscles long after the exercise class is over.

Warmth, rest, and cleansing, can be used during times of vulnerability to prevent acute illness, as well as to help us get over these illnesses more quickly.

Treatments

General immune strengtheners are a first step to add, one from the mineral realm – Ferrum phos 6x – and one from the plant realm, such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, Astragalus, or Elderberry.

  • Uriel Ferrum Phos 6x for adults 1/8 teaspoon of powder 3-4 times daily orally or
  • Weleda Pharmacy Ferrum phos 6x for adults one tablet 3-4 times daily orally.
  • True Botanica: Astragalus herbal tincture for adults 20 drops one to three times daily orally or
  • True Botanica Elderberry Thyme syrup for adults2 teaspoons three to four times daily orally or
  • Uriel Echinacea Thuja cp for adults 10 pellets four times daily orally or
  • Uriel Astragalus 1% for adults 10 drops orally three to four times per day orally or
  • Weleda Pharmacy: Echinadoron for adults one tablet four times per day orally, or
  • Weleda Echinacea essence, for adults 7 drops in ½ teaspoon of water three to four times daily orally.

The next step can be to choose a remedy specific for the symptoms:

Pharyngitis (garden variety head-cold and sore throat)

  • Uriel Cinnabar Dandelion for adults 10 pellets four times per day orally for 7-10 days.
  • Weleda Cinnabar cp for adults a pea-sized portion (1/8 tsp) to melt on the tongue every two hours while awake for three days. This remedy works fast, and should not be continued after 3 days if it has not helped in that period of time.
  • Archangelica Eucalyptus rub (Uriel or Weleda) applied to the neck and sore glands several times per day, covered with wool (or other warm fabric) scarf.

Tonsillitis

  • Uriel Apis Belladonna Mercurius for adults 10 pellets four times per day orally.

  • Uriel Purple Coneflower Spray for adults 2-3 sprays orally every 1-2 hours as needed.

Voice rest is essential for rapid recovery from laryngitis, no matter what treatment approach is used.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR: Strep throat Penicillin for 10 days is effective without using broader spectrum antibiotics. Weleda prescription Mercurius cyanatus 4x for adults 7 drops in ½ tsp water four times daily for approximately 10 days is of benefit for strep throat.

**Cautions**

Epiglottitis is a life-threatening version of sore throat which requires emergency room care. Any time a person cannot swallow his/her own saliva, there may be significant blockage of the swallowing tube that could also block the breathing pathway. Immediate trip to the emergency room is required.   A key sign is the person leans the face forward to let saliva come out of the mouth, rather than sitting with the head up straight.
