For some time, it has been known that modern agricultural practices have not replaced minerals into the earth.
Use of fertilizers with nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (NPK) results in a plant which appears like its ancestors, but does not contain the minerals which the plant would contain if it could get them from the soil.
The leafy greens that should contain magnesium, do not contain much magnesium, because it is not in the soil.
One of the main ways glyphosate (brand name Roundup) kills weeds is to interfere with trace mineral metabolism. Roundup interferes with trace mineral metabolism in all the living things it reaches, whether weeds or crops or soil organisms or water life in stream runoff.
This effect of the main pesticide in use today magnifies even more the deficiency of trace minerals in food crops we eat. See GMOs.

Artificial genetic manipulation of seeds to produce different characteristics — no matter what those characteristics are — produces a new product that can be sold. This is a commercial venture, not agriculture. Confusing the two has resulted in placing ownership of seeds in the hands of the chemical companies. Do commercial ventures own life?
Zinc and magnesium deficiencies are commonly noted in healthcare today. Some people have individual biochemical make-up that requires more zinc intake because more is excreted in the urine (pyrroluria). White spots on the fingernails may indicate need for more zinc. Zinc is most concentrated in oysters, and secondly, but in far less concentration, in pumpkin seeds.

Trace minerals are present in tiny amounts in the human physical body, and perform important functions: iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, iodine, silica (quartz), strontium, chromium, boron, and perhaps fluorine. Larger amounts of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, sulfur, phosphorous, sodium, chlorine, potassium, magnesium, are present in the human body.
Minerals are non-living and crystal-like or rock-like by nature. But in the living organism when they enter a living liquid environment, they become activated and enlivened. In this enlivened state, minerals can become the carrier of forces of life or of form-creation.
For example, after birth, silica (quartz) is concentrated in skin, hair, nails, and the sense organs. Its presence in the tissues at the boundaries of the human body indicates its ability to respond to forces of form-creation. Formative forces come from the periphery. See Etheric body, Matter and form. Light, sound, smell – what we perceive with our senses – also comes from the periphery, from outside us. Silica (quartz) in the sense organs, in its enlivened state in the human physical body, supports the sense functions of receiving these forces of light, tone, etc.

Carefully avoid high-pesticide food sources to preserve the mineral nutrition of your body. The main source of these is genetically modified foods, especially corn, soy, canola, and sugar beet. Buy foods labelled both “Organic” and “non-GMO.”
Know the farming practices of your food suppliers if possible. In addition to seeking farms that leave out chemicals, also seek farmers who feed the soil and treat the farm as a living organism.
